Happy 100th birthday Janet Frame!
Date: Wednesday 28 August
Time: 5.30pm – 6.30pm
Location: Wellington Writers’ Studio, 145 Cuba Street, Wellington
Celebrate one of Aotearoa’s most significant writers on the centenary of her birth at an informal gathering with snacks and readings of her work. We’ll have a few readers lined up, but we invite you to bring along your own favourite Frame poem or an excerpt from her writing to read aloud.
This is an opportunity for Frame fans to gather for an after-work social hour in the cosy surrounds of the Wellington Writers’ Studio.
Generative Writing Workshops
Wellington Writers’ Studio’s own Melody Nixon is offering WWS members a generative all-genre writing workshop on Wednesdays in August and September.
The sessions will run on Wednesdays from 12 – 1pm on August 21st – September 18th, for five weeks, and will be centred around two themes: unblocking creativity and playing with the rules of craft. These themes will guide prompts and discussions each week, and the workshops will also have short thematic readings. The majority of time will be spent writing together, with optional sharing.
The workshops are as follows:
- Session 1, Aug 21: Unblocking creativity: Te tinana / the body*
- Session 2, Aug 28: Unblocking creativity: Te whānau / community*
- Session 3, Sept 4: Unblocking creativity: Te taiao / the environment
- Session 4, Sept 11: Playing with the rules: “I”
- Session 5, Sept 18: Playing with the rules: Plot
* The first two weeks draw from Sir Mason Durie’s Te Whare Tapa Wha model for hauora (health). Future workshops will address spirituality and the mind.
You’re welcome to sign up for the full course (at a discount) or drop in for a single session.

Drop in – $25/session
Sign up for the full block – $100 for five weeks.
Melody is offering two scholarships to those who are un- or underemployed so if finances are an issue for you, please do reach out to her.
